How email finding actually works
Every one of these tools does some version of the same three steps.
- Identify the person and company — usually from a LinkedIn profile or a job posting.
- Determine the company's email pattern —
first.last@,first@,flast@and so on, learned from addresses already known for that domain. - Generate and verify candidates — construct the likely addresses and check each against the receiving mail server before returning one.
Step three is where tools diverge sharply. A cheap tool returns the pattern guess with a confidence score. A good one actually verifies deliverability.
The catch-all problem
Many company domains are configured as catch-all: the mail server accepts every address at the domain, whether or not the mailbox exists. Basic verification asks the server "does this address exist?", gets a yes, and reports the address as valid — even when it is not.
This is why bounce rates from cheap finders are much worse than their advertised accuracy. Resolving a catch-all domain requires a provider that can probe further, and it is the single most important thing to check when choosing a tool.
Your sender reputation is attached to your Gmail address. A run of bounces pushes later mail — including replies to genuine conversations — toward spam folders. Thirty verified addresses are worth more than three hundred guesses.
